My family and I have never been attached to mexican traditions, we are not used to put any kind of offering the day of the death, neither we celebrate typical parties on the Independence day holiday, and we aren’t faithful believers of the Guadalupe virgin.
Despite that we’re not traditionalists, I still have in mind some of the conversations my parents used to have regarding to the difficulties we as mexicans passed because our existence wasn’t well seen in the world, especially in North America; those words remained printed in my unconsciousness and when I grew up, I believed that foreign people and foreign places were unttainable.
Everyone on earth is programmed to adapt to a system that force us subliminally to be faithful to it, that programming is composed of familiar, social and national loyalties according to the country that saw us born, how’s this possible? Well, our ancestors generate a consciousness according to their personal and collective story; let’s suppose that our farthest ancestors were those indigenous who were enslaved during the colonization; according to history, Christopher Colombus was in charge of sending to Europe 500 indigenous slaves to auction them in Meditarrean markets; of course, that imformation remained in the ancestral memory that generated a collective wound, and possibly you’re replicating it through modern practices which are based on ensalving yourself in a job that pays you with the time of your life.
I’ve never liked politics but the way I look at it, is as if the government were a couple with whom I have a corresponsability; this means that I need to understand what’s what I have to do to make this relationship work, because like you know, a relationship is formed of at least two parts; therefore, if I want that everything be in order with myself and the government I chose by free will, I have to correspond with my part, but what does it mean to correspond?
I can choose not to be corrupt with the authorities when I don’t follow instructions; not to wait until my government puts near me a trash can so I can throw away my consume or have the initiative of picking up the garbage that’s not mine, because the planet that holds this country belongs to everyone and affects us all; possibly by self-will stop using my car one day a week to help the air to be purified because the air is a vital energy we all need to exist; and in case I have to use my car I can reduce the complaint of the horrible traffic in which I’m also involved and complaining implies to vibrate from a place that only attracts more the same; take care of the water because it’s not mine, it’s ours; being on time to my commitments because I can’t accuse my partner as bureaucratic when in myself, there’s no real initiative to be punctual.
“A good government can only exist, when there are good citizens.”
Francisco I. Madero .
I’ve heard foreign people say that Mexico is an amazing country, I believe it is because it’s evident; we’re rich in nature, we have an amazing gastronomy; we have a great culture which I presume is wonderful; it’s a country that has a history full of wisdom; in resume we’re rich, very rich, but we’ve been conditioned to believe that we’re the opposite, the third world people, the poor, the bad ones; those beliefs are supported in a nationalism that has positioned us in the victims of a system that doesn’t want to see us grow.
My concern is not about a government, it’s not the economy; it’s not the violence; my concern is the mental poverty that gathers us all to form a country because we already got used to live upset, resentful, ensalved, resigned, violated etc., and this mentality has made us create 2 types of mexicans; the ones who want to sacrifice themselves even though the exchange is little and the ones who don’t care who they sacrifice as long as they get.
To assure that the government is the guilty of the bad things that are happening, is like throwing the stone and hiding the hand about a situation in which we like or not, are responsible as well; in my opinion I believe that a government is the result of what people offers; so I ask you to answer this: what do you believe is best for the country? Please answer with humility and consciousness without putting the government as the guilty of your ailments.
I believe that nobody knows this because sometimes we can’t even understand what’s the best for oneself, what happens is that we hear the collective ego that talks about our rights but says nothing about our duties.
If you really want things to change, I invite you not to wait until you are given the tools so that changes can happen, please take the initiative and start yourself with the changes at your reach; if you have a wonderful life, then you’re in the position to help people, so do it; also help picking up the garbage in the streets where you’re walking, possibly won’t be your trash but it’s the country you so proudly shout out at the national festivities; also involve yourself in humanitarian activities that allow you to connect with empathy; offer your company to people so they can cross the street and in that way, you’ll be helping so we can stop vibrating in the habit of indifference; when you encounter with someone ask her/him: how are you?, that’ll help us finish with the irrational classism; likewise, in your salarial plans you can help old people who doesn’t have the same strenght as you to continue; take care of the water, be on time, be thankful; remember that helping someone is never useless.
You my dear are more than a country, more than a label, more than a nationality; you’re existence and you deserve to experience life fully wherever you are; you’re worthy of reaching success and remember if the others have, it’s not because they’re taking us something away, they’re teaching us that we can turn opportunities into possibilities, you’re a human being capable of creating light regardless of the place where you are, the difference of those who achieve it and those who don’t, are those who believe, and credibility doesn’t have a citizenship; you are an amazing person who deserves to experience a healthy, stable and kind country; and the best of it, is that you can materialize all of it starting with yourself; nevertheless, if we remain on the memories of guilt believing that there’s no solution, that would mean conforming ourselves to live as the victims of the history that gave us birth.
Toast to Mexico, to the world and to yourself, Shary ChavLó ∞
