My name is Shary Yareli Chavarría López, I was born in Mexico City; I grew up in a family of 4 members, my sister, my parents and myself. As many, I’m part of a mexican family with mexican grandparents and spanish ancestors.
Like you know, when we are children we lived immersed in the innocence and everything we hear and see from the adult world, is what we percieve as real and that helps us build our own conscious approaches to face the world we are part of.
I remember when I was a child I listened to my parents talk about the situation in Mexico before the world and my father used to say that some countries didn’t like mexican people because it was a poor country and maybe because of the way we looked. Of course, my unconscious mind just kept the information and accepted everything that helped me in that moment to build my perception of the world and maybe of the limitations I would face because I chose to be born in the wrong place.
I can say that Mexico is an amazing country, there is cultural, natural, gastronomic richness and wonderful customs which conform its history; personally I percieve Mexico as a sad country because we live under a huge wave of insecurity that positions us within the most violent places in the world and that causes we as a mexicans live in a terrible conformism that makes us believe this is the country we need.
I don’t usually talk about politics or religion, those are not in my area of expertise, but I’ve heard that many people complain about the government we have, however I’ve always said: “a flower grows according to the seeds we sow”, so I dare to say we are those seeds with the name of victims, a role we’ve chosen collectively and that has lead us to create the perfect agressor, maybe because we are not self-aware of our thoughts and actions and today we’re not having a charitable harvest, that’s why we haven’t stopped blaming the things that come from our own choice, because as someone once said: every nation has the government it deserves.
You know? I don’t justify anyone, nonetheless, there are things outside of my absolute control because I believe that sometimes it’s impossible to transform a system that feels distant and looks like the guilty of everything, when in reality I’m not even capable to transform what’s near me, because everything is like a snowball, is enough for you to shape it, so alone can take the proper growth.
Mahatma Gandhi once said: “be the change you want to see in the world”, it’s absurd we keep fighting for peace, justice, rights, equality, when everything we ask for doesn’t live in us, how can we transform that external change if in our own heart doesn’t exist peace? how can we provoke justice if in our day by day we do unfair acts pointing the other for not being the way we think they should be?, how can we ask for equality if we don’t stop labelling the other as “bitch”, “pussy”, “poor latin”, “black people” and all of that makes that we fall in the same racism hole we haven’t left for centuries, please I want you to be self-aware that racism was a created system for all of those who felt different than others, and that made them believe they had more value; a system that worked and still works as a defense to exclude the one existing race, that’s the human race.
It’s not neccesary to go that far just ask yourself: how do I relate with my environment?, how do I choose to treat those people that I feel don’t look like me?, am I critical, judicious, hater? So how are we going to attract those things if they don’t resonate with myself, now imagine a bunch of people doing the same; what do you think is the result?
If you realize, we’re living in a pontius pilate’s [1] world, crucifying, condemning and throwing stones to those who don’t look or think the way we believe is correct; we are still under the skirts of a nazi world judging those people who didn’t have the same possibilities we had, and that makes them undesirable before our eyes; we are in another system of apartheid[2] baptized with the name of bullying which feeds through the rejectment caused for having decided to born and be different.
I’m not black, I’m a man.
Martin Luther King.
I have no idea of how much time I have left on this earth, but I can say that I have the intention of leaving it better than I found it, because if I don’t try, my life wouldn’t have any sense, I have the same dream Martin Luther King had, the dream of respecting the other because s/he decided to come in a different body than mine; respect that the other chose to come from a different nation and that doesn’t mean his/her losses or wounds hurt different than mines; respect that if that person decided to come in the same space time as me, is to enjoy what we have in common, that’s life; respect that every person has the right to inhale the same air that my lungs use to breathe, and thanks to that, I can be present; simply start respecting the other’s existence, the same I ask mine to be respected.
I also have the dream of walking through the street without any fear to be kidnapped or raped for being a woman; or to be in a place where I no longer have to protest and claim for my rights as a human, a place where going to school or to a concert won’t be dangerous; a place where children don’t have to hide to play to avoid being bombarded; a place where we can all be free and I don’t find myself forced to choose just one type of haircut; a place where eating is a right and not a luxury; a place where a car full of explosives doesn’t show up to take away the life I chose to have; a place where living isn’t a danger but a benefit, an unbreakable right which come from my own yearn to be in the same planet as you.
Please that your purpose in life won’t be based on having money, being famous or having power because you are not going to take any of that with you. Remember that admiration doesn’t come from the other’s applause but from the concept you have about yourself, so please that your purpose be offering consciousness to those that don’t have one; where your acts are just as fair as the ones you demand; where your words towards others are as compassionate as the compassion and empathy you expect to find on the outside; where that help you want to have from the outside be a result from the support you give others; that your critics towards others be based on respect, the same you demand back; leave the other be free without labelling him/her as “freak” because s/he is not the way you want, because if you don’t promote any of that, then you’ll fall in the traps of your own double moral made hypocrisy.
I want you to understand that all nations have had wars, murders, destructions, so let’s stop raising our patriot pride because we are only living more of the same, remember that being part of a territory doesn’t define us or make us more or less valuable, borders are just illusory lines with different names, so please remember this life story is only moment so stop ambitioning that’ll be something eternal, because for this universe you are only powder and you will return to that state.
Maybe for some people I have the “bad fortune” of being mexican but I also have european roots, maybe that’ll increase my value and that way I’ll earn your respect… I don’t think so, maybe for some people I made the wrong choice to be born here and for that they’ve decided to separate me from you with a big wall, but I want you to know that construction doesn’t limit my dreams much less my possibilities, because I love life, I love having chosen to be born here, love being a woman, I love being latin but what I love the most, is to know that I exist and for me, that’s enough.
There are many people in the world that haven’t known how to process their pain or resentment for the infinite wounds they didn’t allow themselves to close and that makes them look for places where they can deposit all their frustrations. Have in mind there are things we cannot change, but what we can transform is the perception we choose to give to all those experiences, remember that all of us are sowing seeds that are making of this world an uninhabitable place and the only thing we’re achieving is the extinction of the new generations. It’s not about changing the other so you can be better, it’s about you being able to see within yourself so you can be useful for the world.
I understand the situation you’re passing through and I honor your huge courage, but please ask yourself why are you choosing those experiences in your life, because if you decided to arrived to your country is for a reason only you can know, remember that nothing in this world occurs by chance or luck, let’s be conscious of why we keep choosing teachers like racism, resenment, violence, separation and hate so they can teach us how to surrender, accept and respect each other because it looks that tragedies are what bring us together, thus, don’t allow yourself that comparisons or any limitations from those who feel more powerful than you make you believe that your personal value depends on how you look or how much you have, because your true value came installed in you from the first moment you opened your eyes, that value is called life.
I love you,
Shary ChavLó∞
