When I finished my degree I prepared my resume which showed the short experience I had in jobs; of course, when someone called me for a job interview I got very excited ’cause I felt that my professional life was about to start, I don’t know if this ever happened to you, but when you go to the first interview there’s need to impress; when the interviewer entered the room and asked me about my experience, I tried to say everything I was capable of, so the interview could flow perfectly; suddenly, the recruiter asked me a question that confronted me: How do you see yourself in 5 years?
When I heard that question, my head started to spin ‘cause for me, thinking 5 years ahead seemed eternal and I wasn’t at the place I really wanted to be in life; therefore, how was I going to visualize myself in such a long time? The memorized answer I knew was: “being succesful and belong to a company that allows me to grow individually and professionally” so through my answers I could be considered as an ambitious candidate; 5 years have passed since my last interview and today, I don’t belong to a company that’s allowing me to grow and my concept about success has changed over the yeras.
I believe that thinking about the future is one of the thoughts that torment us the most ‘cause we haven’t understood how to live with the uncertainty that tomorrow brings, ‘cause it’s in that uncertainty where we’ll find our biggest fear of not becoming what the others want us to be.
Since we were children our future was conditioned by our parents desires, they ambitioned a great future for us; on the contrary, in their limited beliefs and personal failures decreed us one of the worst futures ever. For human beings, time has been one of the biggest issues; therefore, every day that passes by, we see time as the most expensive value ‘cause we believe that our life is represented through it; that thought was impossed to us since we had to comply a school schedule so our education could be justified in the conversion of a qualified hand that’ll work in the future in order to adapt to a job that’ll pay us with the time of our lives.
“Don’t dwell in the past, don’t dream of the future, concentrate the mind in the present moment.”
Buddha.
Imagine the burden we leave to the future when we rely on it, the benefit of being happy someday; when we put the weight of our lonelliness on it, wishing that some day will come to us the person who’s going to make us feel accompanied; when we think that through fight and sacrifice is how we can obtain something good; when we give to the future the responsability of our joy, so that at the end of the path, we can get some peace; when we do everything for him or her so one day s/he can finally love us the way we dream; the reality is that we haven’t learned how to become responsible of the present ‘cause it hurts, confronts and dissapoints us, ‘cause thinking in the future running away from here and now, won’t solve anything ‘cause we’re creating that future through the nonexistence that’s perceived empty and depressing.
Once I told you that we’re not a life, we’re life manifesting constantly; this means, we live the past, present and future time, in the same space-time ‘cause we haven’t understood yet how to do a healthy separation about what happened, happens and will happen; therefore, we feel our present with the guilt of the past and think about it with the anxiety of the future; and if this continues, we’ll hardly understand what reality is teaching us and when there’s no understanding, there’s no love, much less consciousness.
If we dispose ourselves to connect with here and now in order to accept the present the way it is, we’ll understand many things about ourselves, we’ll know that there are no past couples nor future illusions; but present relationships characterized by the mutual freedom where the other person can stay or leave ‘cause the only thing that compromises him/her, is the love that s/he is willing to give us and vice versa; extending the present to the future and bring it back to the past means you’re playing with our destiny without anchoring it in a specific goal; so it’s moment that you decide what kind of person you want to become ‘cause the thought related to yourself and your incoming future, will be the conditioning that’ll make you turn into the person you yearn to be or the one who will feel enslaved to live what you have always feared to experience.
Just live, Shary ChavLó ∞
